Power Composition Description

Tom's new book, shows readers how to use their camera’s exposure controls (aperture, shutter speed, ISO) to establish the focal point of the image and create the overall mood of the shot and choose a particular lens or focal-length setting to massage the way elements in the original scene will appear within the frame. Next, he presents chapters on using shape, color, lines, and arrangement to strengthen the intended visual message. Readers will learn how to best place their primary subject (and in some cases secondary subject) for maximum impact and will discover artistic strategies that reinforce that decision through careful use of color, tone, highlight and shadow, leading lines, curved shapes, and relative size-qualities that will contribute to the overall mood in the image. Copious illustrations emphasize the impact that putting these concepts into play will have on your images-and these are often coupled with images that show how ineffective images are when those important compositional needs are not attended to.

Thomas takes his readers from the basics of camera and lens controls through shape, color, line, and artistic considerations in the recreation of not good images, but great images with a great down to earth approach to learning, for a final finished image. He is clearly dedicated to expanding common principals of composition and its components, to give the reader an uncomplicated set of principals for a final analysis in photographic imagery.

Informative Book

ByL. Pasquaon January 28, 2015

Although I'm not a photographer, but an artist by trade, I find this book helpful because good design is the foundation for not only a good photograph, but also for a good painting. It is frustrating for me when I see a well done painting that is poorly designed. Tom gives the reader numerous design ideas and applies them with easily understood examples. This book is worthwhile for both photographers and artists.

Tom's composition techniques not only guides and teaches the novice but challenges the professional toward mastering the conditions to create amazing images. I love what Tom says in his Final Thoughts. "To master photography is to master the conditions. Only when you've master the conditions will you know the full extent of your creative ability." To write a book that can speak to both the beginner and experienced photographer is a feat in itself but to also show, through his images, to help you create stronger images is amazing. He takes you from understanding how your equipment(cameras and lenses) render the image to helping you to realize your own creative style through great composition. Tom, also, shows you how not to shoot and image which sometimes can be just as helpful as giving you a proper example. When you a though reading this book do not throw it on the shelf, you will be back refering to all the great information that Tom has to offer all photographers.

Tom is passing along the knowledge one needs to best develop and execute his masterful technique

By Deb Ferencak on January 19, 2015

As someone that appreciates the outdoor splendors as well as photographs that vividly capture those images, Tom Gallovich's "Power Composition for Photography" is a real find for novice and skilled photographers alike. In my travels, I have encountered several "picture perfect" moments; but, only pure luck would allow one to catch those moments on film at precisely the right second. Tom's methodical processes for composing a more compelling frame proves that one need not rely on luck to get the shot they desire. More importantly you learn that, with the right approach, one can even make the ordinary appear breathtaking. Through his obviously vast experience, Tom is passing along the knowledge one needs to best develop and execute his masterful technique.

I liked what Tom did here

By william brattina on January 17, 2015

I liked what Tom did here. Use his examples and apply them to any given situation and I think your pictures will not only improve but come alive. The book helps you concentrate on what is important, the scene in front of you and although mechanics are important nothing beats a well composed picture. I also like the composition options he demonstrates. I think he gives the users a chance to find their own style and strengths. His efforts have given photographers a wonderful tool to up their game. About Tom Gallovich

"Remember, to master composition is to understand the way people think"

Long ago Tom purchased a Minolta X - 570 to obtain reference for his nature paintings. Always up before sunrise, he began to record some of natures most powerful moments. It was then, he decided that some of his photographs could not be improved by a painting.

Photography was now demanding most of his time. Using his artistic background as the foundation to compose his photos, Tom’s work slowly gained attention. After winning hundreds of state-wide awards, he began to enter Nation and International competitions. Placing in such events as the Natural World Photographic Exhibition, Carnegie Museum, and Triennial/Biennial at the Southern Alleghenies Museum of Art.

With many workshops, completing his book "Power Composition", and teaching at the associate degree level behind him, Tom is now moving forward to create his best work ever. He currently resides in Western Pennsylvania.
