Watercolor Painting: Statue & Gargoyle

Watercolor Painting: Statue & Gargoyle

In this demo I answer some Rebelle Forum questions about tracing from a photo. I emphasize the use of warm and cool colors to portray the light and dark shapes. Also break down all shapes with the use of a hard or soft edge. I discuss the use of watercolor base coats and how they tie the objects of a painting together. Using the Water and Dry Tools to isolate specific areas to paint. Examples of the Tilt Tool and how it gives unique color mixing and patterns. Then add complexity to render specific textures of an object.

Watercolor Painting: Snow Goose

Watercolor Painting: Snow Goose

In this demo I start with a freehand drawing then convert it to a main mask layer. Combining this mask with other masks isolate each area I wish to work on. I then use a Transparency Lock on a water layer to establish a final masking layer. I use photos as reference to guide me with lighting issues and how to best establish an intense light source direction. I also discuss various textures and techniques to best render given objects. This is a demo of a painting that evolves to improve the final piece.

About Wall Murals

Multi Image Canvas Prints & Their Superior Detail

Our GIGA Pixel canvas prints hold extreme detail beyond the maximum delivery size. The largest size available for home and business delivery is 84″ x 84″. These GIGA Pixel files may exceed 250 megs as a JPEG ready to print. Bit Depth, Layers, and File Type (JPEG or TIFF) all determine the overall size of the file. This is where the term GIGA PIXEL Image came from. A single image file will often exceed a gigabyte in size. What does this all mean? Exquisite and extremely detailed canvas prints! When close inspection of the artwork is probable high detail will be appreciated.

Pittsburgh 80 x 40

Please Mouse Over For Close Inspection.

This landscape panorama is a composite of 24 images. A total of 8 photos bracketed 3 ways thus giving a total of 24. My goal is to create a pleasing composition with the best possible detail digital equipment can produce. In this particular photo the strong texture of the snow intensifies that detail. These files are ideal for large prints, very large! A print in excess of 60 inches leaves little room for lack of quality. On close inspection the massive files printed on canvas gives the appearance of a freehand painting. This is due to the weave of the canvas. The largest canvas print that can be shipped in the lower 48 states is 84 inch x 84 inch. A multi panel set is used for images beyond 84”. I have several landscapes that exceed 120 inches in width. This of course is a camera generated 300 DPI composite.

Custom Sized Multi Panels

Multi panel canvas prints allow the creative process to extend beyond the image. Each panel may be cropped and sized to compliment the image as well as the wall space it will occupy. Size and shape combinations are limited only to ones imagination. Choose from our standard sets or please ask about a custom set unique to your space and style.

Multi Panel Prints Allows For Extra Large Canvas Prints.

An additional benefit to multi panel canvas wraps allow for dimensions beyond 84″. Due to shipping limitations 84″ x 84″ is the maximum size able to ship to the lower 48 states. With multi panels, the finished dimensions will be limited only to the quality of the image file and camera generated size. The Pittsburgh piece below measures 100″ x 42″ (not including gaps between).

DESIGN MORE CREATIVE AND COMPELLING IMAGES OF ANY SCENE OR SUBJECT.

Tom’s new book, shows readers how to use their camera’s exposure controls (aperture, shutter speed, ISO) to establish the focal point of the image and create the overall mood of the shot and choose a particular lens or focal-length setting to massage the way elements in the original scene will appear within the frame. Next, he presents chapters on using shape, color, lines, and arrangement to strengthen the intended visual message. Readers will learn how to best place their primary subject (and in some cases secondary subject) for maximum impact and will discover artistic strategies that reinforce that decision through careful use of color, tone, highlight and shadow, leading lines, curved shapes, and relative size-qualities that will contribute to the overall mood in the image. Copious illustrations emphasize the impact that putting these concepts into play will have on your images-and these are often coupled with images that show how ineffective images are when those important compositional needs are not attended to.

Painting Set Up & Masking Layer in Rebelle 4

Painting Set Up & Masking Layer in Rebelle 4

In this demo I use an actual maple branch as my painting reference. Once I draw my branch study I create a mask from its outline. The mask is used to protect my transparent watercolor illustration from the background colors. I can select the mask area or invert the selection and work on the background. The protected area will effect how the watercolors will mix and move in the background. We can solve this in several ways…
